Systems Biology And Medicine

Last offered — AY2014/2015 Semester 1

To introduce the principle, high throughput experimental techniques, and basic computational methods used in systems biology research. This course will emphasize on the application of systems biology to health care and medicine, such as personalized medicine, cancer and cardiovascular disease. This course will also introduce the emerging field of synthetic biology, and the method for creating new (artificial) life and recreating extinct species. Systems biology is an emerging biological research that build-up from three essential components: biological principle, quantitative data from high throughput experimental techniques and computational methods for data mining and integration. This course will cover the current and emerging high throughput experimental techniques for generating quantitative biological data, for example, potential DNA sequencing techniques for sequencing a human genome in hours? time frame with < $100. In addition, basic computational technique and network/graph theory for data mining and integration will be introduced. The ultimate goal of systems biology is to advance health care and medicine. The course will cover the importance of blood biomarker for disease diagnosis and prognosis in systems medicine. It will also introduce the application of systems biology to cancer and cardiovascular disease research. Synthetic biology builds on the knowledge of systems biology and engineering principles to construct and standardize biological parts for creation of more complex systems and artificial life. The course will introduce the concept/principle of logic gate, minimal genome/life, chemical synthetic genome for synthetic biology. These research areas will engender many potential applications in the biomedical, material science and energy sectors. This course is a descriptive course. Mathematics will be minimized to cater to the average biological sciences undergraduate student.
