The course will provide an understanding of the basic approach to the finite element method (FEM) for structural stress analysis. As most aircraft and aerospace structures are complex and cannot be analysed analytically, all underlying fundamentals required by the FEM will be taught so that students eventually become intelligent users of this powerful numerical tool. In addition, it will provide a general understanding of vibration analysis methods applicable to the design of aircraft structures, covering vibration analyses of discrete and continuous systems, vibration measurement and control. The aim of the course is to extend and enhance the fundamental solid mechanics concepts for solving both general and complex aircraft structural problems.
