This course consists of weekly two-hour lectures and one-hour tutorials over 13 weeks. The whole course is divided into two parts. In the first part, students will learn the 'sites' of madness through introduction to classic readings, including Foucault's 'ship of fools', sanctuaries in empires, prisons in colonies, Freud's psychoanalysis, etc. In the second part, they will learn how the development of science, medicine and technology help framing the sane and insane. From the age of big pharma to issues associated with the current society, specific case studies will be used to enhance students' understanding the interaction of 'psy' sciences, society and culture.
