China In Revolution Reform

This module examines the history of China from the late Qing Dynasty (1900-1911), Republican China (1912-49) to the People's Republic of China (1949-), with a focus on key transformation from revolution to reform and the integration into globalization. The focus is on revolution and reform, the two main themes which competed and alternated throughout the past century. Other themes such as tradition, modernity, nationalism, industrialization, war and identity will be discussed in the course as well. Besides the lectures, the tutorials will guide students to attach more attention to origin and evolution of various thoughts and ideologies, and the causation and key figures behind these events. It will also examine how modern China has interacted with and has had an impact upon the outside world.
