The term 'computing systems' is often misinterpreted to mean just personal computers of the desktop, laptop or tablet form. However, computing systems come in many forms from tiny embedded computer systems that drive devices like our mobile phones and cameras to large business computer systems that handle vast amounts of data. There are also large computer systems that drive social networks and search engines and databases and supercomputers that provide high power computing for scientific purposes.
The course provides an overview of computing systems and the basis for the further detailed study of the topics in computing systems in the SCSE programmes as well as the appropriate background as a free elective for any other programmes. It also exposes students to computing applications and trends in the real world.
