Surface energy and thermodynamics; electronic structure; phase transition; elementary excitations; physisorption and chemisorption; energy transfer.

Schottky barrier and band offsets in semiconductors; band engineering.

Analytical techniques include scanning tunneling microscopy; electron diffraction methods; photoemission
