This course discusses the electronic and magnetic properties of solids. * Metals - conductivity and heat capacity; density of states at Fermi level; nearly free electron model and band gaps * Distinction between metals, semiconductors, and insulators * Semiconductors - direct and indirect band gap (Si, Ge, GeAS); optical absorption, effective mass and holes; carrier concentration, law of mass action; impurity donors and acceptors; mobility and Hall effect; band gap measurements * Magnetic susceptibility, Larmor diamagnetism, paramagnetism, and Curie's law; Pauli paramagnetism; magnetic ordering (ferromagnetism and anti-ferromagnetism) and Weiss molecular field theory; Curie-Weiss susceptibility
