This course introduces civil engineering materials at a basic level. 1. Civil engineering materials and environmental considerations. 2. Concrete technology: concrete-making materials, properties of fresh and hardened concrete, mixing, placing, and curing, mix design, destructive and non-destructive tests, quality control, durability, and special concretes. 3. Masonry. Steel: basic metallurgy, properties and applications, welding technology and corrosion. Wood and timber: classification, properties affecting design, mechanical strength and defects. Polymers, plastics, and fiber-reinforced composites. 4. Highway materials: bitumen, cutbacks, emulsified asphalt, road aggregates and asphalt concrete.
