Last offered — AY2017/2018 Semester 1

The theoretical contributions of Durkheim, Weber and the Marxists provide the backdrop for a study of the significance of sport within society during the twentieth and twenty first centuries. Themes and issues relating to the expansion of mass and elite sport are examined within local and international settings. Eastern and western perspectives of the significance of sport and physical activity are compared. Power relations and the accommodation of various groups within the sporting system are considered.
