East Asian Literatures in Translation will focus both on traditional and modern literature from East Asian countries and the range of reading material may include folktales, poetry, classical epics, drama, short stories and novels, as well as emerging styles and media. The diversity of reading reflects the richly textured range of cultural, historical and aesthetic dimensions that will be explored, including: traditional symbols and fantastic creatures in folklore stories, distinctively Asian epics, and contemporary anxieties related to traditional and contemporary notions of family, marriage, women and community life, as well as conflicts between 'Asian' traditions, national identity and political ideologies.
