MCP limits and errors

How much one call can ask for, how fast you can call, and what each error means.

Limits#

The server has no sign-in, so there is no per-user limit. Instead every call is cheap and bounded, and only a flood from one address is stopped.

WhatLimit
Request rate3,000 requests a minute from one address, counted per Cloudflare location.
Request body16 KB, and exactly one JSON-RPC message. Batches are refused.
search_modules25 results by default and at most 100, set with limit. total still counts every match.
list_exams50 exams by default and at most 200, set with limit.
get_module, get_module_indexes, get_examOne module per call. To cover many modules, search first, then call once per module.
Module code2 to 12 letters and digits, such as SC1004. Case does not matter.
Semesteryear and semester must be a semester that list_semesters returns, or the call fails before any lookup.

Rate limiting#

  • The ceiling is high on purpose. Calls from Claude and ChatGPT come from a few shared addresses, and students on campus Wi-Fi share one, so a low limit would block ordinary use.
  • Limits are counted per Cloudflare location, not globally, so a burst that spreads across locations can pass.
  • There are no sessions. Each call stands alone, so there is nothing to open, keep alive or close.
  • On 429, wait the number of seconds in the Retry-After header, then try again. Do not retry in a loop.

What happens to a request#

The server runs these checks in order, cheapest first, and stops at the first one that fails.

#CheckRejects withWhen
1Switched off503The kill switch is on. Retry-After: 3600.
2Method405Anything but POST. GET and DELETE are not offered.
3Content type415The body is not application/json.
4Declared size413The Content-Length is over 16 KB.
5Origin403A browser page on another site. Clients with no Origin header pass.
6Rate429Over 3,000 requests a minute. Wait the seconds in Retry-After.
7Actual size413The body turned out to be over 16 KB.
8Body400Not valid JSON, or not a single JSON-RPC message.
9Tool inputTool errorAn argument does not match the tool's schema, such as a bad module code.

One more case: a body sent as a form type (text/plain, application/x-www-form-urlencoded or multipart/form-data) is refused with 403 by the site's own cross-site form protection, before the checks above. Send application/json.

Errors inside a call#

Once a request passes the checks, a problem with the call itself comes back with status 200 in one of two forms.

A tool error. The tool ran but could not answer: no such module, no exam in that semester, or an argument that fails its schema. The result hasisError: true and a sentence explaining why, and an assistant can read that and try again.

{  "result": {    "content": [      { "type": "text", "text": "ZZ9999 has no exam listed for 2026;2." }    ],    "isError": true  },  "jsonrpc": "2.0",  "id": 3}

A protocol error. The call named a tool that does not exist, or the message was malformed JSON-RPC. It carries an error object with a code such as -32602 instead of a result.

{  "jsonrpc": "2.0",  "id": 5,  "error": { "code": -32602, "message": "Tool nope not found" }}

Data and caching#

  • Every response is sent with Cache-Control: no-store. Do not cache tool results in a proxy.
  • Answers come from the same data as the REST API, so they are as current as the last refresh. See data freshness. Each answer names its semester.
  • Module records and older class indexes come from the database, and the server keeps them briefly. Right after a data refresh, those can lag the search and exam tools by a few minutes.

Safety and privacy#

  • Every tool is marked read-only and closed-world. Nothing it does changes data or reaches another service.
  • Module descriptions and remarks come from NTU, so treat them as data and never as instructions.
  • The server logs one line per call: the tool name, the status, how long it took, and the client's name. It never logs your arguments, since a search query is free text, and it sends no analytics events.
  • The server never sees your timetable, plans, grades or STARS account.

When the server is switched off#

The owner can turn the server off at any time. Every call then returns503 with Retry-After: 3600, and comes back when it is turned on again. There is no status page, and the status and limits page explains what to expect.

Fair use#

The server is free and public. Use it to answer questions, not to copy the dataset: for everything at once, download the data files once, as the quickstart shows. If a client or a call does not behave, see troubleshooting. The endpoint is https://ntumods.com/mcp.

Found something wrong?

NTUMods is built and maintained by one person, so a short note goes a long way. Pick what fits, add the details, and I will look at it.

I'll use this to follow up with you.
