Chemical Bio Engineering Fundamentals Applications
AY2022/2023 Semester 1
This course is designed to introduce key concepts of chemical, biomolecular and biomedical engineering to year 1 REP students, and to provide students with a comprehensive yet concise overview of the topic. It is divided into 3 parts: biomolecular engineering, chemical engineering and their impact and biomedical applications. Biomolecular Engineering is designed for those of who have minimal biology background to learn the fundamentals of life sciences and its application in biotechnology. It emphasizes on conceptual appreciation of biological molecules, cellular structures and processes, and molecular interplays, which are the basis of "chemical processes" in living systems. The objective is to provide students with a comprehensive and concise overview of biological science with emphasis on its application to biotechnology. Chemical Engineering introduces the students to the roles of chemical engineering in our everyday life with an emphasis on its role in enabling sustainable energy solutions. The students will be introduced to the key concepts of chemical engineering, i.e. (1) material balance in chemical processes and (2) chemical reaction engineering. The students will also learn how advances in artificial intelligence and data science will enable chemical engineers to decarbonize the chemical industry. Application and impact of relevant biomedical technologies will provide a comprehensive and concise overview of biological science with emphasis on its relationship with biomedical engineering. Another objective is to build on fundamentals of basic mathematics, physics and chemistry in order to explore applications of engineering in biology and medicine. More importantly, this part emphasizes conceptual appreciation of the molecular interactions which are the basis of "biochemical processes" in living systems.
