Probability Introduction To Statistics
AY2018/2019 Semester 1
This is a core mathematical course, aiming to develop your understanding of fundamental concepts in probability and statistics such as random variables, independence, basic probability distributions, and confidence intervals. The course also prepares you for further statistics courses such as MH3500 in the Statistics Track. Course Content Definition of probability, conditional probability, Bayes Theorem Discrete distributions (binomial, negative binomial, hypergeometric, Poisson) Continuous distributions (normal, exponential, gamma, beta) Joint distributions and marginal distributions Random variables, expectation, variance, quantiles, independence Functions of random variables, sum and quotient of two random variables Law of large numbers, central limit theorem Sampling distributions, confidence intervals, hypothesis tests
