This course introduces students to system design at the foundation of sustainable design. A holistic, systems-view of design for reuse, remanufacture and recycling can bring about greater impact on sustainability than if they were treated in isolation. The planning of systems and products that meet customer requirements is embodied in Quality Function Deployment, while DFA and DFN'l are applied to the realisation of systems and products. User experience/Emotional Design have gained traction over the years and is now a pillar of impactful product/system design. At the core of sustainable design, rules and principles of Design for Disassembly, Remanufacturing, and Recycling will be discussed, notably dematerialisation and waste minimisation. The life-cycle assessment of a system/product underpins its environmental impact and so will be introduced. Finally, going forward, in line with the world-wide trend towards `servicization', product-service systems will be discussed.
