The course aims to introduce to you the engineering design process, the role of designers and the systematic engineering design process (including needs finding, product planning and definition, conceptual, embodiment and detailed design) through a design project relevant to manufacturing engineering. You will learn to creatively sketch out engineering/product ideas and produce engineering drawings to the relevant standards and communicate effectively design ideas and solutions. You will also practice basic theories and design calculations of machine elements and learn to apply the following: a. Machine elements and components appropriately in a design project. b. PLC technology in the control of the mechanical system in the design of the product or manufacturing system. c. Systematic procedures in the selection of materials in designing a product or system. d. Tools for the product cost estimation in designing a product or system.
