Environmental history was first developed in the United States in the 1960s, during a period of heightened environmental awareness in American society. In this course, we study the development of American environmental history, analysing how it has been influenced by the country's concerns and position in the world. We will examine topics (e.g., wilderness, environmentalism) and pay attention to the subdiscipline's global links. Along the way, we will learn about the diversity in the American environment and society. We will also explore the environmental history of Canada and Mexico.
