AY2015/2016 Semester 1
The Course introduces fundamental topics in Etymology and Historical Onomastics. Key subjects covered include: - basic elements of General Etymology as a Reconstruction Science in Linguistics; - elementary elements of the various branches of Etymological Sciences, Lexicography, Onomastics, and Toponomastics; - comparative readings and exercises ? at an elementary level ? about the subject of the Course, in order that the students can practice directly with Etymological Sciences; - basic elements of Historical Linguistics and Etymology in Historical Onomastics and Historical Toponomastics (Toponymy, Hydronymy, and Oronymy); - direct and experimental application ? at a general, elementary level ? of Historical Phonetics and Historical Laws, case-by-case, to specific cases and samples, mainly focused on some languages of the South-East Asian context; - discussion and debate with students inherent in the topic of the Course
