Pragmatics Of Ai Language

Last offered — AY2025/2026 Semester 1

This course introduces you to various research on the broadly defined AI language, including but not limited to human-AI interactions, AI-generated texts, and AI-assisted language learning. It focuses on pragmatics (and its neighbour sociolinguistics) that look beyond the grammatical accuracy and coherence AI seems to have achieved. Pragmatics concerns several hotly debated issues in the capability of generative AI, for example, AI's violation of human politeness. By bridging linguistic research and the recent developments of AI, this course endeavours to cultivate future interdisciplinary researchers and AI analysts. You will learn the state-of-the-art studies in regards to the pragmatics of AI performance and critically explore the capability and limitations of AI. You will also acquire basic techniques to collect data from AI and conduct theoretically driven, experimentally sound analysis of its output. The course responds to the need for humanities students to participate in future AI design and development
