Understanding China

AY2024/2025 Semester 2

This course aims at analyzing "Chineseness" and engendering critical thinking about the representation of "China" and its society, culture, politics, and people in various media. In light of critical theory, the course examines what traditions and experiences have shaped the historical construction of what "China" is, and what values and beliefs might inform its future development. Media (print, digital, internet, etc.) to be studied include those in the West, China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Southeast Asia, and overseas Chinese-language media.
