A historical review of Chinese communities in Singapore and Malaysia, the subject starts with the period before World War II, exploring internal divisions in the communities as well as the Chinese?s economic and political relations with the British colonial government and China. It also examines the changes after World War II, with special attention paid to the ethnic Chinese?s political reorientation, participation in the nation-building projects in the countries of residence, and response to China?s economic reform.
