Petroleum Geology Of Se Asia

AY2017/2018 Semester 1

This course is divided into 3 parts. In Part (i) students will be introduced to the Petroleum System i.e. from source to reservoir for both conventional and unconventional oil and gas. They will learn about siliciclastic and limestone source and reservoir rocks, thermal maturation during burial, porosity and permeability during migration and sealing, and seismic interpretation of structural and stratigraphic traps. Drilling, logging, appraisal and production methods will be outlined. In Part (ii) students will study the geological settings of the oil and gas fields in Malaysia, Indonesia, Papua New Guinea, Thailand, Cambodia, Myanmar, Philippines, Vietnam and southern China. Students will prepare and make group presentations on a world class petroleum province and apply this knowledge to planning an exploration programme in SE Asia. In Part (iii) students will undertake a 5-day field excursion (during the mid-semester break) to an active petroleum system in South East Asia (e.g. Labuan). It is expected that participants will become Student Members (free of charge) of the South East Asian Exploration Society and attend the bi-monthly meetings in Singapore. Here, they will be able to mix with working petroleum explorers and discuss internships and career prospects.
