With the growing volume and complexity of data, systematic efforts in managing and structuring these data are increasingly central to effective data retrieval, analysis, sharing, and re-use. Drawing from the fields of data modeling, database design, knowledge organization and representation, and semantic Web, this course covers the principles and methods of data representation, modeling, and organization. Students will gain knowledge and experience in data representation and organization through lectures and hands-on tutorials. Content The value of data representation, organization, and management in today's environment. Concepts and principles of data modeling. Components and types of data models. Core concepts of database design. Relational data model. Prominent metadata schemas and application profiles. Metadata schema design and implementation. Structures and components of taxonomies. Taxonomy construction. Ontology and the semantic Web. Basic RDF. Linked data. Tools and software for data representation and organization.
