AY2017/2018 Semester 1
This subject focuses on the material and energy balances in chemical processes and lays foundation in thermodynamics. Students learn the conceptual forms of energy, ideal gas, thermodynamics properties, and the laws of thermodynamics. The applications of thermodynamics are studied in terms of different phases and their coexistence via phase equilibria and mathematical formula, which will be derived from the 1st and 2nd laws of thermodynamics. Content Materials balances. Material balance for single and multi-component systems. Energy balances. This course introduces the different energy forms, thermodynamic properties, and their relationships in terms of concepts and applications in close and open systems for ideal gas, real gas and simple fluid. Homo-and heterogeneous phases are also considered with single or multiple component systems. In particular, the laws of thermodynamics are applied to solve abstract and real-life problems.
