What is the meaning of life? This is one of the timeless questions of philosophy. In a world full of war, disease, and struggle, this is a natural question to ask. In this course we will begin by refining the question, and then we will study some candidate answers. Some say that there is no meaning life. Some say that there is meaning in life only if a grand supernatural deity is looking out for us. Some say that we can get meaning in life by pursuing personal goals, like curing cancer, collecting stamps, or caring for a kitten. Some say we can get meaning in life through love, or science, or art. In this course we will attempt to understand and evaluate these various proposals about the meaning of life.
