Can there be a just war? If so, what are the requirements for fighting a war justly and ethically? This course is about the morality of war. We will study fundamental questions about war, such as whether wars of national self-defence or humanitarian aid are permissible, and fundamental questions about principles for fighting in an ongoing war, such as proportionality and non-combatant immunity. Other topics will include the use of AI and drones in warfare, mandatory military service, and nuclear deterrence.
