English, or British, Literature cannot be seen as standing in isolation, and European, or "Continental," literature and culture have had an undisputed and indeed multilayered impact on British writers throughout the centuries. This subject aims to provide an overview of these influences and then focus on a range of specific examples from selected periods or genres to highlight the importance of a comparative approach to world literature. Most importantly, however, it will introduce students to some of the best literary works produced in Europe over the last centuries.
