This course will examine the historical forces that shaped a collection of islands spread across the equator narned by the Dutch colonizers as "the Netherlands East Indies" into the world's largest Muslim majority democracy today. This course looks at the Indonesian archipelago from the early modern/colonial period to the present day. Main contents include, chronologically: 1. Early history and the Islamization of the archipelago; 2. The establishment of the Dutch colonial regime; 3. The emergence of nationalism and Indonesian National Revolution; 4. The Japanese occupation; 5. Sukarno's reign and Indonesia's position during the Cold War; 6. September Thirtieth Movement of 1965 and the ensuing mass killings 7. Suharto's New Order 8. Reformasi
