Earthquake geology can be divided into neotectonics (including tectonic geomorphology) and paleoseismology. Neotectonics concerns the study of crustal deformation that has occurred as a result of motion along faults in the geologically recent past and which may be ongoing; paleoseismology looks at sediments and other geologic features for clues of ancient earthquakes. The course will provide a detailed overview of the different types of faults and their associated deformation patterns and will explore paleoseismic techniques to reconstruct earthquake histories along a fault. This course is aimed at students with interests in earthquakes, neotectonics, or geomorphology; it will help prepare these students for advanced research in these fields or for careers in hazards-related fields.
