This course begins with an introduction to an analytical framework for the study of grammatical structures in English and Chinese. A range of linguistic forms and functions are then compared and contrasted systematically at different levels of analysis. Further comparisons are made in terms of how different semantic and pragmatic notions are expressed in the two languages: questions, negation, reference, quantification, anaphora, topic, focus, existence, location, possession, etc.
