Special Topics In Modern China

Current offering — AY2025/2026 Semester 2

Since the early 20th Century, China has experienced the most dramatic social changes and transition. This course examines modern China's major social, political, economical and cultural issues from a historical context and interdisciplinary perspective. These issues include: Environment and climate, ethnic frontiers, gender, media, hygiene, historical memory, social class, urbanization, social protests, the rise of China and nationalism. This course aims to stimulate student's interest in advancing their studies and research on contemporary Chinese politics and society, broaden their academic horizon and guide them in understanding China in the 21st century from an interdisciplinary and comprehensive perspective. This course aims to broaden student's academic horizon and familiarize them with the international academia's latest development and research method on modern China studies. Students will also acquire the relevant basic research method; learn how to write academic book review, research plan, final year project and/or academic paper.
