The Contemporary Creative And Cultural Industry Of Singapore
AY2015/2016 Semester 1
This course is intended to familiarise NTU students to the creative and culture industry in Singapore. Through lectures, study trips, discussions and seminars, the students are taken through the planning and implementation of strategies, from Singapore?s birth as an independent country to present day, that has shaped the creative and cultural industry landscape as seen today. The student has an overall view of art, design, media, architecture, music, dance and drama and an understanding of the institutes, organisations and buildings that house these for people to interact and enjoy. This course starts with a brief background history of creative arts and cultural environment at the time of Singapore's birth as independent nation and follows up with the different plans, policies and developments over the 1970s, 80s and 90s arriving at the point where the government initiated a Creative Industries Development Strategy in 2002. The course then covers the direct and indirect effect from this strategy and examines the present day eco-system that has seen the iconic Esplanade, Singapore Art Museum, Museum of Asian Civilisations, Marina Bay, etc.
